History
The XIT Museum in Dalhart preserves the history of Dallam and Hartley counties and the XIT Ranch, created when Texas granted three million acres to a Chicago syndicate in exchange for building the new state capitol after an 1881 fire. Fenced with over 3,000 miles of barbed wire and spanning parts of ten Panhandle counties, the ranch is documented through period rooms, ranching equipment, and an extensive photo archive. Prompted by a 1941 remark from author J. Frank Dobie, the museum opened in 1975.
