History

The African American Museum of Dallas was founded in 1974 by Dr. Harry Robinson Jr., originating in a small room at Bishop College's Zale Library in Oak Cliff. It became an independent nonprofit in 1979 and moved to Fair Park after Bishop College's 1988 bankruptcy, opening its 38,000-square-foot, cross-shaped ivory-stone building on November 13, 1993. The site lies near where the 1936 Texas Centennial's Hall of Negro Life once stood.
