Amberton University started in 1971 as ACC Metrocenter, a Dallas-area outpost of Abilene Christian College that first held classes on vacant campuses in Mesquite and Fort Worth, with a criminal-justice program for police officers as its early cornerstone. In 1974 it moved into its own two-story office-building campus in Garland, and it was known as Abilene Christian University at Dallas after the parent school became a university in 1976. Following a four-year effort to earn its own accreditation, the branch became independent on June 1, 1981, under the name Amber University, reportedly chosen by students and staff simply because they liked how it sounded. It became Amberton University in March 2001, adding a suffix meaning 'town,' opened a Frisco branch in 2006, and today enrolls mostly graduate students, chiefly working adults, in programs that can largely be completed online.
