The Denton County Courthouse-on-the-Square, built in 1896, is a Romanesque Revival landmark designed by Waco architect W.C. Dodson using limestone, pink granite, and multicolored sandstone. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it remains the resting place of county namesake John B. Denton. The Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum opened in 1979 in the former district courtroom on the second floor, with free exhibits on Denton County history and culture, including African American and Hispanic heritage.
