History

African American residents organized Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in 1909 on the farm of John W. and Eliza McCarty about 2.5 miles south of Sanger, then moved into town in 1910 and built a church that also served as a school. In the early 1920s the women of the congregation raised and sold cotton to buy a church bell that is still rung each Sunday. Larger buildings followed in 1957 and 1998, and the Texas Historical Commission marked the church in 2009.
