History

This Victorian house in Cuero was erected by F. W. Bates in October-November 1886. Bates's wife was the former Elizabeth Sheppard of Indianola, and her brothers Joseph and Henry, left homeless by the great hurricane of August 20, 1886, helped build the house using lumber salvaged from the ruins of the Sheppard home in Indianola. Altered and enlarged in 1925, the house remained in the family until 1968 and now serves as the DeWitt County Historical Museum; it is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
