History

On May 1, 1898, German settlers north of Yorktown organized the Gruenau Turn and Schuetzen Verein, combining a Turnverein (athletic club) with a Schuetzen Verein (shooting club). The community built its first hall in 1900 and a larger one in 1927, hosting dances, feasts, and marksmanship contests that crowned a Schuetzen-Koenig, or king of the riflemen. After the historic hall burned in 2007, it was rebuilt and reopened in 2010.
