History

The Asberry School served the African American community of Yoakum beginning in 1930, growing out of a 1920 consolidation of two earlier Black schools and reportedly aided by funds from the Rosenwald program that built schools across the rural South. Initially offering ten grades and later twelve, it was renamed Asberry High School in 1948 to honor principal Professor J.D. Asberry. The school graduated its final class in 1966, and a Texas Historical Commission marker was placed in 2013.
