History

Ellison Springs Cemetery was established by pioneer stock farmer James Madison Ellison (1840-1923) following the 1876 death of his mother, Nancy Baird Ellison, a Georgia native who had served as a midwife to her frontier neighbors. Although begun as a family plot, it was always kept open to friends and others in need. The nearby springs lent their name to the Ellison Springs Indian Fight of August 9, 1864, in which Lt. Singleton Gilbert and about fifteen Texas militiamen clashed with Kiowa and Comanche raiders near present-day Gorman, losing three men.
