Odessa College was founded in 1946 as Odessa Junior College to serve Ector County and the surrounding Permian Basin, and it dropped "Junior" from its name around 1976. The college reached the U.S. Supreme Court in Perry v. Sindermann (1972), a landmark case on due process for public employees that arose from the non-renewal of an Odessa Junior College professor's contract. Its campus holds the Globe of the Great Southwest, a replica of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre with a copy of Anne Hathaway's cottage, where full-time theater began in 1968. The college opened a technical training center in Pecos in 1999, survived a 2011 state proposal to close it, and its athletic programs have won dozens of NJCAA national titles.
