History

Chamizal National Memorial in El Paso commemorates the 1963 Chamizal treaty that peacefully ended a century-old boundary dispute between the United States and Mexico. The conflict arose because the Rio Grande, set as the border by the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, shifted its course over time, leaving a tract of land known as El Chamizal in dispute. Under the settlement, the river was relocated into a concrete channel and land was exchanged, and part of the resulting parcel became this National Park Service memorial, which today serves as a cultural center with galleries and a theater.
