History

The area known as Concordia in the 1840s was the ranch home of Chihuahua trader Hugh Stephenson; his wife, Juana Ascarate, was buried here in 1856. The cemetery was formally established in 1883 and by 1890 was divided into Catholic, Masonic, Jewish, Black, Chinese, military, Jesuit, city, and county sections, making it a record of El Paso's full population. Now covering about 52 acres with more than 60,000 graves, Concordia was named a Historic Texas Cemetery in 2005; its marker was placed in 1984.
