History

Joshua Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church at 110 North Aiken Street traces its congregation to 1876 and is named for the Rev. Joshua Goins, remembered as the 'father of African Methodism in Texas.' The two-story red-brick, Romanesque Revival sanctuary was built in 1917 to a design by William Sidney Pittman, a pioneering Black architect and son-in-law of Booker T. Washington. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
