History

The Ellis County Museum is housed in the 1889 Masonic Temple, the oldest building in downtown Waxahachie, and was organized by local citizens in 1968. Its exhibits trace more than 130 years of county history, from prehistoric times and Native American heritage through the cotton economy that made the area one of the most prosperous in Texas and the Victorian "Painted Ladies" architecture Waxahachie is known for. The free museum also serves as the Heritage Visitor Center of Ellis County.
