History

The Erath Arches, at Washington Street and North Erath Avenue in Stephenville, are a pair of mirror-image quarried-limestone gates built in 1936 for the Texas Centennial. Local architect C. V. Head designed the structure, which Dublin stonemason Arthur Maxwell carved, and a bronze plaque honors Major George B. Erath, a San Jacinto veteran, Confederate officer, and legislator for whom Erath County is named. The Erath Memorial Arch was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2018.
