History

Builders Stidham and Kurtz erected this two-story Romanesque Revival brick building on the Fayetteville square in 1900 for merchant Hugo Zapp, replacing an earlier wooden structure that had burned. The only masonry commercial building on the square, it retains polychrome brickwork and pressed-metal ceilings and once held a store, a dentist's office, and hotel rooms. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
