History

The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center was incorporated in La Grange in March 1997 to preserve the history of Texas Czechs, an idea first raised at the 1936 Texas Centennial and revived by the Texans of Czech Ancestry organization in the 1990s. La Grange was chosen over Caldwell, Ennis, and Temple in part because Fayette County was once about 80 percent Czech, earning the nickname "Cradle of Czech Immigration." The campus includes the "Our New Home" Museum, the Melnar Library, a Czech Village of historic buildings, an amphitheater, and a polka pavilion.
