History

St. Michael's grew out of an Irish Catholic community that settled this part of Fayette County beginning in 1875 and was originally known simply as the Irish Settlement. Visiting priests began serving the families in 1879, and in 1885 eight families built a church they dedicated to St. Michael. The adjoining cemetery holds burials dating to 1878 and remained in use as the parish grew to include German-American Catholic families; a parochial school operated at the site from 1891 until 1956.
