History
North American University began in 2007, when the nonprofit Texas Gulf Foundation opened Texas Gulf Institute on the Sam Houston Parkway in southwest Houston to offer certificate courses. After the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board authorized it to grant bachelor's degrees in 2009, the school became North American College in 2010 and enrolled its first degree students in education, then computer science and business. It held its first commencement in May 2013 with a dozen graduates, and that August, shortly after winning approval for its first master's program in educational leadership, it took the name North American University; master's classes began in 2014. In 2016 NAU moved to its present campus on West Airport Boulevard in Stafford, and in 2018 it earned accreditation from the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges. Today the small nonprofit university draws students from dozens of countries to its business, computer science, criminal justice, education and English-language programs, and its Stallions compete in the NAIA.
