History
Salem Cemetery grew up beside the Salem Predestinarian Baptist Church, one of the oldest congregations in Freestone County, founded in December 1853 by Thomas Dossey, C. T. Echols, and the Lee families on land given by the McSwaine family. The settlement lay about four miles south of Teague in southwestern Freestone County. The cemetery's earliest grave dates to 1861, and the church and cemetery received a Texas historical marker in 1967. By the late twentieth century the church and cemetery were nearly all that remained to mark old Salem.
