History
James Washington Winters (1817-1903) was a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto who spent his later years at Bigfoot in Frio County. In 1901 the Daughters of the Republic of Texas asked him to help identify key points on the San Jacinto battlefield for the placement of markers, and his recollections were published in the state historical quarterly in 1902. He is buried in the Brummett Cemetery a few miles east of Bigfoot.
