Galveston College

Galveston's college story has an unusually long prologue: island voters created a junior college district on November 2, 1935, yet the property tax needed to run it was voted down in 1936 and again in later tries, leaving the district unfunded for three decades. Plans on the Galveston County mainland for a separate college in the mid-1960s spurred islanders to act, and after the Texas Attorney General confirmed that the old district had never legally lapsed, voters approved a supporting tax in 1966. The college enrolled its first students in September 1967, working out of the three-story building that had housed St. Mary's Orphanage since 1950; the regents bought it that May with Moody Foundation money and named it Moody Hall. During the 1980s the college also used a second site at Fort Crockett, which it gave up in the 1990s after buying land and building new facilities around the main campus at 41st Street and Avenue Q. A separate Charlie Thomas Family Applied Technology Center opened in 2013 for trades and health programs, and since the late 1990s the Universal Access endowment has covered tuition and fees for eligible graduates of Galveston Island high schools.
