History
The National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg is the only U.S. museum devoted entirely to the Pacific theater of World War II, sited in the boyhood home of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, who was born there in 1885. It grew from the Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz Memorial Naval Museum, which opened in 1967 in the old Nimitz Hotel on the anniversary of Nimitz's birth. Today its six-acre campus includes the George H. W. Bush Gallery, the Admiral Nimitz Gallery, the Japanese Garden of Peace, and the Pacific Combat Zone.
