History

Harper Community Cemetery lies at Harper, a Hill Country town on U.S. Highway 290 about twenty-three miles west of Fredericksburg in far western Gillespie County. The area was first settled by the Matthew Taylor and Eli McDonald families in 1863, and the town was named for George Franklin Harper, who opened its first post office in 1883. The cemetery is the principal burial ground for the community and holds more than a thousand recorded graves belonging to the ranching and farming families who built the area.
