History

Goliad State Park preserves Mission Nuestra Senora del Espiritu Santo de Zuniga, founded by Spanish Franciscans in 1722 near Matagorda Bay to convert the Karankawa and moved to its present site on the San Antonio River in 1749. The mission became one of the first large-scale cattle ranches in Texas, running tens of thousands of head, before it closed in 1830. The Civilian Conservation Corps reconstructed its main buildings in the 1930s, and the site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.
