History

This flamboyant Sherman residence was built in 1896 for cotton broker and industrialist Noble Allan Birge (1832-1902), a Connecticut native who had served as the first elected sheriff of Marion County before moving his family to Grayson County in 1874. Builder John Tulloch erected the house shortly after the great 1896 Sherman tornado destroyed an earlier 1877 dwelling on the same site. Its exuberant mix of Queen Anne and Colonial Revival forms includes steeply pitched ornamented gables and a monumental portico with Ionic columns. The home remained in the Birge family until 1969 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
