History
West Hill Cemetery is the historic municipal burial ground of Sherman, established in the late 19th century and today spanning roughly 120 acres near the center of town. Among those interred is Thomas J. Shannon, remembered as the "Father of Sherman" for donating land for the townsite, along with Aaron S. Mangum, one of the few soldiers of the Texas Revolution known to be buried in Grayson County. Many of the roughly sixty-six people killed in Sherman's catastrophic tornado of May 15, 1896, were buried here, though the exact locations of a number of those graves were never recorded. The cemetery is still operated by the City of Sherman and remains open for burials.
