History

Basin Springs Cemetery in northwestern Grayson County was formally deeded by J. S. and Mary J. Funk on June 3, 1907, though its earliest known burial, that of Hiram Lilly Murray, predates the deed. The land had been part of the Funk family farm, and a traveling salesman who died in the area in 1861 is remembered among the first buried there. The cemetery served the Basin Springs community, which supported a school, several churches including Mineral Baptist Church, and numerous farms before consolidating with the Sadler schools in the 1940s.
