History

Financed by Louisa Loftin and opened in 1876, the P. A. Smith Hotel in Navasota's Railroad District is a three-story building of native limestone with a cast-iron facade, regarded as the town's most ambitious 19th-century commercial structure. It took the name of Philip Aurene Smith, a New York-born former schoolteacher and civic leader who married Loftin in 1875. Long derelict, the National Register-listed hotel reopened after a multi-year restoration completed around 2021.
