History

Whiteside Cemetery began in the early 1800s as a burial place for enslaved people and their descendants on the John Whiteside plantation near the Yarboro community in southern Grimes County. Long abandoned, it had become lost to memory until it was rediscovered during Texas Highway Department survey work for the planned State Highway 249, and it is believed to hold many additional unmarked graves.
