History

The Dunham-Wood Cemetery lies in the southwest corner of Grimes County on the historic Jared Groce league, not far from Groce's original plantation home known as Retreat. After Groce died in 1839 the surrounding land passed to the Dunham family, who lived there for a decade, and a family burying ground grew up nearby. A 1960 survey recorded about 18 graves, though cattle destroyed most of the markers and only a few remain identifiable.
