History

Fairy Cemetery serves the small community of Fairy in northeastern Hamilton County, which took its name in 1884 from Fairy Fort Phelps, daughter of pioneer settlers Battle and Sallie Fort. The earliest known burial dates to about 1880, though deed records show the ground was not formally set aside as a community burial place until 1890. Among those interred are area pioneers, victims of the 1918 influenza epidemic, and veterans of conflicts from the Civil War through the Korean War. The Texas Historical Commission placed a marker here in 1994.
