History
The Ice House Museum in Silsbee occupies a 1928 ice plant built by Gulf States Utilities that once produced up to 30,000 tons of ice a week for local residents and passing trains. Ice-making at the site dated to 1909, when a company incorporated to make ice and bottle soda; the plant closed in 1983 and the building reopened as a museum in 1990, earning Silsbee's only Texas Historical Commission designation. A later grant from the Silsbee Economic Development Corporation funded renovations, and the museum now documents the city's development, the region's timber industry, and Hardin County history.
