History
The Bertha Terry Cornwell Museum in Sour Lake was established in 2001 through a bequest from Bertha Cornwell, a longtime local librarian and historian, and is administered by the city behind the Alma Carpenter Library. It preserves the history of Sour Lake, a Hardin County town named for its sulfurous mineral springs that once supported a health resort with bathhouses and a hotel. The museum's collection highlights the area's oil heritage, as the Texas Company struck oil here in 1903 and launched Texaco's rise, and the property also holds Hardin County's original jail cells used from 1870 to 1888.
