History

This cemetery lies at Honey Island, an unincorporated community in central Hardin County about thirty-five miles northwest of Beaumont. During the Civil War the area drew Jayhawkers who subsisted partly on wild honey, and it later grew into a timber town, with the Matile Lumber Company and a Honey Island post office established by 1907. The burial ground served the community's African American residents.
