History

The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum was founded in 2001 by Vietnam veteran and military historian Captain Paul Matthews, who had spent three decades collecting African American military memorabilia. It is dedicated to the Buffalo Soldiers and to African American servicemembers across all branches of the U.S. military. In 2012 the museum moved into a 1925 building on Caroline Street that once served as the headquarters of the Houston Light Guards, an armory offering 23,000 square feet on three levels.
