History

This marker commemorates the site of the first 'White House' of the Republic of Texas in Houston, the residence used by President Sam Houston from 1837 to 1838 and by President Mirabeau B. Lamar from 1838 to 1839 while Houston served as the Republic's capital. A Texas Centennial marker was placed in 1936 in downtown Houston near Main and Preston streets.
