History
Edwin Fairfax Gray (1829-1884), born in Fredericksburg, Virginia, was a military officer and railroad engineer who served as Houston's city engineer. In 1873 he became the first commander of the Houston Light Guard, a Texas militia unit organized on the anniversary of the Battle of San Jacinto. He died in Houston in 1884.
