History
Built in 1956-57 at 2999 South Wayside as the corporate offices of one of Houston's largest construction firms, the Farnsworth & Chambers Building is a landmark of mid-century modern design by architects MacKie and Kamrath, local followers of Frank Lloyd Wright. From 1962 to 1964, NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center used the building as its headquarters while the future Johnson Space Center was under construction, and the original Mercury 7 astronauts worked from the site. The building is a City of Houston Protected Landmark, a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
