History

Dr. David Finney Stuart (1833-1909), born in western Virginia and trained in medicine in Philadelphia and New Orleans, began practicing in Washington County, Texas, in 1860 and served as a Confederate surgeon in the 10th Texas Infantry during the Civil War. Moving to Houston in 1866, he survived the 1867 yellow fever epidemic and became an authority on the disease, and with Drs. Larendon and Boyles he opened the Houston Infirmary in the early 1870s. A chief surgeon for several railroads and chairman of the Houston Board of Health, he was regarded as a leading Texas physician; his marker was placed in 2009.
