History

The Wiley College Cemetery marks the original site of Wiley College south of Marshall, the historically Black institution founded in 1873 by the Methodist Episcopal Church's Freedmen's Aid Society and the oldest such college west of the Mississippi River. The burial ground remained after the college moved to downtown Marshall in 1880 and holds graves connected to the school's early families.
