History

This marker recalls the first jail of Hartley County, which was organized in 1891 with the small town of Hartley as its original county seat. Hartley held the seat only a few years before an 1896 election shifted county government to Channing, a move confirmed by a final vote in 1903. The marker has been reported missing from its site near the town of Hartley.
