History

Hays County was formed from Travis County on March 1, 1848, and named for the celebrated Texas Ranger captain John Coffee 'Jack' Hays. San Marcos was designated the county seat, and the county's organization spurred settlement, with the population climbing from 387 in 1850 to more than 2,000 by 1860.
