History

The River Valley Pioneer Museum at 118 N. 2nd Street in Canadian interprets the settlement of the eastern Texas Panhandle in Hemphill County. Its exhibits span Native American life, the 1875 Red River War battles of Lyman's Wagon Train and Buffalo Wallow, and the arrival of the Santa Fe railroad's Southern Kansas Railway in 1887. The collection features the early-twentieth-century photographs of Julius Born documenting the region's people and rapid growth.
