History
This marker points 133 yards east to the site of a large cottonwood that appeared on frontier maps of the Canadian River country as early as 1874. In that era the surrounding Hemphill County was crossed by the newly laid Jones and Plummer and Government trails, which carried the army, buffalo hunters, ranchers, and herds of longhorn cattle. The lone tree served as a well-known landmark on the open Panhandle plains.
