Trinity Valley began in 1946 as Henderson County Junior College, after Athens business leaders and Cross Roads school superintendent Orval Pirtle rallied county voters, who approved the college with 93 percent of the vote. Lacking buildings, the college leased Fair Park from the city and filled it with war-surplus structures, from old barracks used for teaching to a Camp Howze theater that became its 800-seat auditorium, and Pirtle stayed on as president until 1971. Veterans on the GI Bill swelled early enrollment, and from the late 1960s the college reached beyond the county with classes in Palestine, Terrell and state prison units, later opening centers in Palestine, Terrell and Kaufman. In 1986 it adopted the name Trinity Valley Community College, after the river that crosses its region, and today it serves Anderson, Henderson, Kaufman, Rains and Van Zandt counties from its headquarters campus in Athens.
