History

The Museum of South Texas History in Edinburg is anchored by the 1910 Hidalgo County jail, a Spanish Mission Revival building acquired by the newly organized county historical museum and opened to the public on April 19, 1970. The restored jail includes the hanging room, used only once, in 1913, for the execution of Abram Ortiz. The museum interprets the history of the Rio Grande Valley, greater South Texas, and the neighboring northeastern Mexican states.
