History

Mel Haven Cemetery, near Sulphur Springs, is a historically African American burial ground originally known as the Colored City Cemetery; it took the name Mel Haven in 1972. According to local histories, the first person buried here was the personal servant of a local Civil War veteran, and the grounds hold roughly 1,200 graves. The Hopkins County Genealogical Society has documented the site through its land deeds and a full index of marked and unmarked graves.
