History
Built in 1893 for businessman James E. Downes, the Downes-Aldrich House in Crockett is an elaborate Eastlake Victorian with multiple porches, an octagonal tower, ornate woodwork, and distinctive Moorish arches. Downes sold it in 1911 to civic leader and historian Armistead A. Aldrich, who served as county judge and state legislator and lived there until his death in 1945. Now a cultural center, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
