History

Colonel David Alexander Nunn (1836-1911) was a lawyer and Confederate officer who settled in Crockett, Houston County, where in 1859 he was elected the town's first mayor. When Texas seceded he raised a cavalry company mustered into Confederate service in 1861 as Company I, Fourth Texas Mounted Volunteers. Nunn later served in the Constitutional Convention of 1875, helping shape the state's public-education provisions, and died in Crockett in 1911.
